Why does my dog's head nod when lying down, like a heartbeat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

I notice my dogs head "nodding" sometimes. (he is a 4 year old bichon mix). Its mainly when is laying down. It seems to nod in time with his heartbeat. It doesn't seem to happen all the time but other times it's quite pronounced. It doesn't seem to bother him, but it does worry me that it may be neurological. When I've brought it up at our vet office they've always just kinda glazed over the it as it wasn't happening at the time. Can't capture it in a photo, but I can upload a video or link.

There are a number of partial seizure type conditions which can cause similar signs and generally would not be treated unless progressing ir affecting his quality of life. I recommend you keep a diary of frequency and timing of events and if linked to any particular events or types of food etc and also video the episodes to track any progression
