My elderly deaf blind dog sleeps in the rain. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Male | unneutered | 16 years and 5 months old | 0 lbs

My dog is both deaf and blind, he's 16 years old this year. We've had rain these past few days and even tho I walk him into his kennel I wake up to find him asleep on the grass in the rain. Any advice?

Hi there. Is there an option to keep Wags inside and out of the rain? Perhaps a garage or inside your home would work to keep him out of the rain. He may not be feeling very well and trying to cool off. Strange behavior in any older dog we worry about-it may be time for a trip to your local veterinarian. Hope this helps!

Poor Wags, as dogs age they can become quite confused, they can even get a touch of dementia. Obviously lying in the rain is bad for him, could you consider letting him sleep in the porch or garage? It may be worth going to the vet as there are medicines that increase blood flow to the brain and function. You
