My senior dog is limping, but no pain. Could it be something other than arthritis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 13 years and 7 months old

A week ago began limping on front left leg. Has gotten progressively worse over the week. Wil be going to the Vet tomorrow. Assume it is arthritis but it seems odd it came on so quickly and is worsening each day. I can extend the leg and move it back and forth and she does not show any signs of distress. I've checked to ensure nothing is stuck between toes or in pad. Any other possibilities?

Arthritis is very likely, sometimes it is exacerbated by another injury. It could also be a ligament sprain or muscle strain. There is also the less likely possibility of a hairline fracture or something more sinister like a bone tumour.

Yes he may well be losing sensation in the limb or may be too uncomfortable or weak to correct it. I strongly recommend a full physical exam by your vet and review of his current arthritis medications as there may be an opportunity to adjust the medications and improve comfort as well as reduce swelling which may be putting additional pressure of the nerves. Chiropractic care and acupuncture can also provide relief of such symptoms
