My dog's drains are out. Is bleeding normal? How to clean dried blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 13 years and 2 months old | 64 lbs

Clarabell had drains removed from her chest/upper leg area yesterday. There is still blood seeping and occasionally dripping from the area where the drains were. Is this normal? Also, the vet told me yesterday to start cleaning the dried and congealed blood from around the wounds, but it's not coming off with a warm towel. Should I be scrubbing at it? Please see attached photos.

It is normal for there to be continue drainage but it should start decreasing within the next 12 to 24 hours. If it does not, or there is an odor, it becomes thick or appears anything but blood then it could indicate further issues and she needs to be taken back to the veterinarian. I would scrub the area but instead use a very moist washcloth and rubbing the area gently with a very small amount of a mild soap. If Clarabell has increasing pain, redness, swelling or seems weak/lethargic than she needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
