My large dog limps on his back legs after walks. Is it his hips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 100 lbs

My dog is a one year old American bulldog, Kobe, that we regimes at 3.5 months from the dogs trust. Recently, after long walks (over an hour) he has a slight hobble on his hind legs. Sometimes his left, sometimes his right. Usually for a day or so... I'm worried as he is a large breed, this could be related to his hips? My dad has had dogs all his life, and thinks when he's seen it, that it's muscular. But as it's reoccurring fairly often, I'm worried. He's not currently insured

I would recommend Kobe have a thorough orthopedic and neurological exam by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian may need to do x-rays of both his hips and knees to check for certain diseases like arthritis and kneecap issues. Depending on what is going on Kobe may need medication such as joint supplements or even surgery.
