My dog scratched his neck from allergies. How do I treat the cuts?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 2 months old | 78.6 lbs

My dog is allergic to grass and pollen. I went out of town for a few days and his petsitter (family friend) didnt feel comfortable giving him his meds. He scratched his neck in two places. They arent bleeding or deep but i dont know how to treat them other then warm soapy water. Is there anything else I should do for his cuts?

Cleaning them is a good start. You can alternate cortisone cream and neosporin to help dry them up and give him some relief while getting him back in his medicine for that to start working again. If it is a continuous problem your vet maybe able to provide stronger medicine temporarily to get it under control.
