My dog has a changing, discolored lump on his neck. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Terrier | Male | 8 years and 5 months old | 11 lbs

Hi my dog has a growing nodule on the underside of his neck that's starting to change. Started out as a freckle a few months ago. Now it's about 1/10th of an inch in diameter, elevated, bluish black in the center and now there's red radiating from it. I have a picture I can upload. He's a 7year old male Australian terrier.

This could be a benign skin tumor, and infected cyst or gland, or something more serious like a mast cell tumor or a melanoma. Because it is changing I recommend Doby be checked out by a veterinarian. If this is something that needs to be removed it will be easier on him and on your veterinarian to do it sooner when it is still small versus watching it for any changes.
