What can I give my dog for rhinitis when Benadryl doesn't work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 80 lbs

My 6 year old 80 lb rotti mix is having a rhinitis attack. We are out of apaquel and he's been off for about a week. He sounds terrible. I've called the vet for a refill but they are taking their time getting back to me. Is there anything else I can give him OTC other than benadril which doesn't seem to make a difference. (We've been giving him 3 tablets at a time.)

First of all i am surprised Apoquel works for rhinitis attack, it's indicated for skin allergies only. you can try cetirizine Or piriton (both are antihistamines) maybe they will have more effect than the the Benadryl.
