Cat's face swollen, scabby, fur gone. Is it safe to wait for vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 11 months old | 9 lbs

hi, yesterday we noticed a patch of skin on our 3 year old long-haired cat's face, above his right eye, was looking dark, swollen and scabby and the fur had fallen out. We have an appointment on Thursday but I'm worried that might be too long to wait. He is acting normal. Eating, drinking and playing. He rubbed at it with his paw but is not scratching frequently. Can you give me any incite as to what this could be, and if it's safe to wait until Thursday? Thanks!

Poor Mako! The lesion on his face could be due to a number of different things including mange, a skin infection, allergies or a contact reaction to something in his environment. If he is acting fine and eating and drinking normally I think that you can wait until Thursday as long as the lesion does not seem to be getting worse. Your veterinarian may do a skin cytology or skin scraping to get a better idea of what's going on.
