Why is my red eared slider sneezing but still eating and active?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have two red eared sliders. One of my turtles has been sneezing lately. I've adjusted the temperature in their water and made sure I keep nutrient filled pellets in their diet. But, he's still sneezing. I never see any mucosal discharge and he's still extremely responsive and eating normal. What should I do? Bringing him to the vet is out of the question unfortunately because we cannot afford it. Thank you so much for your help! I love my babies

As long as he is eating and active, you can try increasing the water temperature to 82-83F and the basking area up to 90-92F. This may enough to stimulate his immune system. Medicating should not be done without the advice of your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. If Frick stops eating, begins gaping, swimming crooked or starts blowing bubbles, then he will need to see a veterinarian. Confirm proper environmental parameters and good water quality to prevent any illness from developing or worsening.

The water may be too cold or too deep. It should be no deeper than twice the length of the shell and between 75 F and 86 F. Use a small submersible water heater. One can be found in most pet stores. The sneezing could be a symptom of respiratory infection, especially if accompanied by discharge, blowing bubbles or "gaping" ( repeatedly opening and closing the mouth). A respiratory infection needs to be diagnosed and treated by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles.
