My dog had neck tumor surgery: post-op care, collar, and walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 10 years and 3 months old | 77 lbs

Hello! my dog is getting a 1cm diameter tumor removed tomorrow on his neck. I'm worried about how I wil take care of it since it's behind his left ear and I don't know how we'll be able to put a collar on him since it's so close to the wound. Should i not take him on a walk the whole time he's recovering? How can I stop him from scratching the wound if an e-collar might irritate him even more since it's so close to the future wound? What post-op care do you recommend me?

Post up care for an uncomplicated incision is 7 days of keeping it clean and dry. If an e collar will not fit and it bothers him, you can always put a baby sock over his nails. If his collar can't go due to the incision you can always switch to a halter or use a leash an incorporate one arm thru to hold him
