My spayed dog is licking and leaking blood. Is this an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 5.2 lbs

Angel was spayed on Monday & has been doing fine until today. I noticed she started licking her private more than usual & very often buy now i saw she's leaking (again) a watery-like blood. Is this normal after her surgery? She did have pus in her uterus before surgery and the vet said the leakeage was due to the infection. Should i take her back to the vet (wait till monday or go to an emergency clinic) ?

It sounds like Angel had a pyometra, which is a life threatening infection of the uterus. It is concerning that she is licking her genital area more again and you now see a discharge coming from that region. While you can see some bloody draining from the incision site, you typically do not see any coming from the genital region itself. Given her recent history of a pyometra and the fact that I can't see her in person to say if she is ok or not, I think taking her into the emergency clinic is the best idea.
