My dog (2 years, approximately 40 lbs) ate one chocolate cupcake (or approximately .66 oz of unsweetened cocoa) about 45 minutes ago. Should I induce vomiting?

That was naughty of Rudy to eat the cupcake! The good news is that with his weight and the amount of cocoa powder he ate, there will be minimal to no reaction from it. There is no need to induce vomiting. There is a potential for an upset stomach, diarrhea, and agitation, and if you see any GI signs, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Otherwise, Rudy should be fine :-)

If it was just the wrapper and he chewed it well, it should pass in the next 24 hours. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These symptoms should be addressed by your veterinarian. If you want to be sure it comes out, have him seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Either can induce vomiting via injection to get the wrapper up and out. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. Given current events, if you choose to see a vet now, you will likely have to drop Milo off then wait in your vehicle until the vet calls you to discuss exam findings and treatments options or to tell you the wrapper came up and Milo is ready to go.

At 60 lbs body weight one chocolate cup cake should not cause any problems. She could eat up to just under 2 oz of dark baking chocolate safely. 1 large cup cake contains much less chocolate than that.

It depends what type of chocolate it was how much chocolate he ate. Milk chocolate is not as toxic to dogs as dark chocolate or cocoa powder. The dog could eat up to 3-4g per each lb of body weight (so if Kyro is 77lb it would be over 200g of milk chocolate) before we need to do anything. However, for dark chocolate and cocoa powder the toxic dose is below 0.5g per each lb of body weight, so for Kyro eating only 40-50g should be treated. Fudge is not dangerous to dogs. So, if the cake was made of dark chocolate and had had over 40-50g you should make him vomit or take him to your local vets. If the amount of chocolate was less than the toxic dose, no treatment is required.
