My dog on steroids isn't better, has bloating & accidents. Call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 2 months old | 72 lbs

I would like to know if taking steroids and antibiotics will bloat my pit bull and make him not be able to control going to the bathroom. My dog has been to a local vet twice and they are treating him for a skin infection and they told me that's why he does not feel good but I think there is more to it because he does not seem to feel better after taking this medicine for 5 days now. He is also 12 years old and I know he is gonna have health issues. Should I contact the vet again

Poor Bentley! I'm sorry to hear that he's so uncomfortable. Steroids such as prednisone can sometimes cause weight gain, excessive panting, increased thirst, and urinary accidents in the house - so it's certainly possible that some of the issues you are seeing could be side effects from the medication. Since he isn't feeling any better after 5 days, yes - I would definitely recommend giving your vet a call or taking Bentley back tomorrow for recheck visit. It sounds like he may need a different course of treatment, or possibly some diagnostic testing to see if something else is wrong.
