My dog has cancer and won't eat. Is Meclizine an appetite stimulant?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Can I give my dog Meclizine to try to help her appetite? She was dx'd with fairly large cancerous tumor in her abd Oct 6. Since then her appetite has dwindled to almost eating nothing. Neighbor suggested the Meclizine as she had a dog with similar circumstances last year.

No, I would not recommend giving Meclizine to your dog. First off, it is never recommended to self treat your dog, as you may accidentally do more harm than good. In addition, this medication is most commonly used in animals to reduce symptoms associated with motion sickness. It is not used to stimulate appetite. I would take your dog into the vet on Monday. The vet can prescribe a safe appetite stimulant for her to take to try to increase her appetite. I would also like to commend you for checking with a vet expert first before giving her this drug. It's always best to ask a veterinary expert :-)
