My dog's tramadol ran out. Can I give him my human tramadol?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has an Rx for tramadol 50mg for his arthritis pain. it ran out and I cannot refill until mon. I also have an Rx for tramadol 50mg,different manufacturer. Is it safe to give him my tramadol (mfr zydus pharm), until I can get his (mfr amneal) refilled on mon? I have read through the ingredients and the only difference is one has lactose monohydrate(amneal), v. The other has lactose anhydrous and corn starch(zydus pharm).

No, I would not give him your medication, as it is not prescribed for him and it's never safe to give a dog unprescribed human medication. I would refill it first thing Monday, and until then, you can give him glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis. I would also keep him quiet, taking him out to toilet on a lead only and bringing him right back in when he's done.
