My old cat is sick, losing weight, scared of vet. Should I take him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 15 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

My 15 yr old cat has lost a lot of weight recently, his appetite has decreased, stomach making very loud gurgling noises. He had one occurrence of bad diarrhoea a few weeks ago (on my sofa) and for months before was coughing a lot and bringing up bile and small hair balls. He's petrified of the vet so I don't want to cause him anxiety. I think he is dying so I wanted to ask if I should just care for him and let him go gently or risk causing him anxiety and take him to the vet.

Poor Squeak does sound like he's ill, and has a lot of things going on with him at the moment. I think you should take him into the vet. Unfortunately, dying is not a gentle or pain-free process, and he could suffer greatly while you are waiting for him to pass. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, and a urinalysis to see how his organs are functioning and to diagnose what is causing his symptoms. If you really are against taking him to a vet and want to let him go peacefully, I would call to see if there is a vet in your area that does house calls, and they can come to your home to put him to sleep. That is a way of letting him go without pain and in peace, and it would be much kinder to have that done for Squeak than allowing him to suffer until he has passed.
