Why is my cat shedding a lot with red skin that comes and goes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 10 months old | 8.8 lbs

My cat has been shedding hair a lot and she removes them by herself. And her skin is reddish pink but not rough or scaled. Also this condition comes and goes not all year a around. Also I gave her deworming tablets but still this condition is with her until now This condition started 5 years ago when she fell from my balcony, also a male cat from the street tried to mount her that day but I removed her quickly. I don't know what to do? Please help. Thank you

Hair loss can be a sign of external parasites like fleas or mites, allergies to food, or seasonal allergies. In some rare circumstances cats seem to over groom themselves due to anxiety. It sounds like Tota may have a seasonal allergy to something in the environment since her symptoms seem to come and go. There are some prescription medications that can help with allergies so I'd recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian.

It doesn't look like normal shedding, the skin underneath is definitely abnormally red which indicates there is probably an inflammation process going on. it could be fleas, mites, yeast or a bacterial infection, you should start by treating her for fleas and see if it helps first.

The hair loss could be several things including allergies, fleas, skin mites or ringworm (which humans can get). Since this became a sudden problem, I recommend to have the cats examined by the veterinarian for the fastest diagnosis and treatment. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for cats, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing the diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
