My newly adopted cat is aggressive and scary. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I just adopted a 10 yr old cat from a shelter 3 days ago. He's already hissed at me 3 times and he just swiped me with his claw. He will NOT allow me to walk anywhere without screaming, jumping in front of me.... it's SCARY. I'm a prisoner and afraid of him. I want to go to bed but he will stalk me up the stairs again and "bark". Please help me! Sue

So sorry that he is exhibiting this behavior. That does sound scary! I think you should call the shelter where you adopted him and give them an update. I am not sure if they have any prior history to know if this is a typical behavior for him or something new but he doesn't sound like a good fit for you. It could be that he is just scared and needs more time to adjust but if he is being aggressive toward you than I am not sure it is a good idea to keep him and he may need to go back to the shelter. Give them a call and discuss the situation with them. I don't want you to get hurt!
