My nursing dog took Cipro. Is it safe for her and the puppies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed

My female dog had puppies 24 hours ago and i thought she may have an infection.. I gave her some left over cipro the vet gave us for her back when she had an infected toe.. after I gave her half a dose, I realized it may not be safe for the puppies! I started researching and it said to not give to lactating dog! Is her and her puppies gonna be okay since it was just half a dose?! I will be taking her to the vet when they open first thing in the morning..

You're right that fluoroquinolones like cipro are not recommended for use in nursing moms since they can affect bone and cartilage formation in the puppies, But, one dose shouldn't cause any serious problems - as long as you don't give any more, I wouldn't be concerned about the puppies.
