Why did my French Bulldog start bleeding then stop? Is she in heat?

Hi, I have a 10 and a half month old french bulldog and she hasn't had a season yet, then yesterday she started bleeding then today its stopped really concerned. She seems her happy go lucky self. Not sure what to do though.

It sounds like Lilly is probably in her first heat cycle now - bleeding and vaginal swelling are completely normal. Some dogs bleed continuously for an entire week or two, while others may only bleed or a day here or there. Some don't bleed at all, and it can be very hard to tell when they're in heat. Every dog is different, just like people :) As long as she is acting normal, I wouldn't be concerned. If you're worried, you could always have her checked out by your vet to confirm that she's in heat and doesn't have any other issues.

    Hello, sorry to hear about Hero. She may be experiencing other causes of a bleeding which may be associated with a UTI or bladder stones. Additionally, she may also bleed if she has an infection of her uterus. would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian to ensure she does not have a uterus infection. Alternatively, if she doe snot have an infections, you should have her spayed to reduce the bleeding. Hope this helps and best of luck.

One of the external signs of heat in the dog is bleeding. You may also notice a very swollen vulva and frequent urination. If she is otherwise acting normally, it may be that this heat cycle is just late. But if she is unwell, not eating, lethargic or vomiting, then you need to get her seen by a veterinarian. As she is an older dog, she is at risk for a pyometra (infected uterus), and would need an emergency spay if that were the case. You may want to discuss getting her spayed with your regular vet, before it becomes an emergency situation.

Hello. It is very normal for young dogs to have split & prolonged heat cycles the first few times. They usually regulate to a more normal rhythm later on. As long as every test turned up nothing abnormal, you can definitely wait a bit. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hello, the heat cycle occurs in several stages and not all dogs will exhibit similar signs. Some dogs will develop vulvar swelling anytime from the onset of bleeding to 1 week after bleeding. Some dogs may not have vulvar swelling or it maybe minimal swelling that it is hard to notice. If you are planning on breeding her, to determine the best time, you may check her progesterone levels with your primary care veterinarian or allow her to stop bleeding before bringing in a male. Lina was swollen and odorous for two weeks then started bleeding on April 1st. She bled 7 days and then everything went back to normal (no swelling or bleeding since 4/8. Today would be 23 days into the bleeding cycle and she started bleeding again.
Hello, and thanks for your question. Either is possible! A dog's heat cycle tends to last between 2-4 weeks, so she may just have a slightly longer than average cycle. However, they can also have a split heat, where they start their heat, stop it, and then restart it again and finish the cycle. From your description, if she had been "normal" for up to a week, this may be the case with Lina. This doesn't mean Lina will *always* have a split heat - it can be random and may just be a function of her still-developing hormones. The best way to know for sure what's going on with a dog's heat cycle would be to perform cytology, which involves using a sterile swab to look at some of the vaginal cells under a microscope. The appearance of those cells changes throughout the heat cycle. Many breeders make frequent trips to the vet for this cytology analysis to determine exactly when their dog should be bred! I think my puppy started her period, it's not like a humans hers is more like little drops. Her middle part is like twice the size she's been laying down a lot and crying. Is this her period or should I take her to the vet? When she's in pain it scar
Hi and thanks for posting this morning. It sounds like Penelope is having her first estrus or 'heat' cycle. Dogs come into heat twice a year- once in the spring and once in the fall. Dogs do not have menstrual cycles like humans do- they are quite different. Small drops may be all you will notice-that is normal. Each estrus cycle lasts for about 4 weeks or so, the vaginal discharge she is experiencing may last for two weeks. No need to take her into your veterinarian unless you are still concerned, but it sounds like her estrus cycle has begun which is normal to start for smaller dog around 9 months-1 year of age. My dog(indie breed female) her heat cycle started in Feb 24 but still her vulva is bleeding
On average a dog will be in heat for 1 ½ to 2 weeks but this can be shorter or longer; up to 4 weeks. So, this may be normal for her. Just keep monitoring her and if the heat lasts longer than 4 weeks she should be examined by your vet.

Hi, my 8 year old staff has been on heat for 10 days the past two days she has been bleeding a lot more than usual. She is eating as normal, I'm constantly washing her and changing her bedding
The bleeding can be heavy at times, it occurs to prepare the womb for fertilised eggs. This means the old lining of the womb gets expelled in bits and pieces, which lays blood vessels open which therefore bleed. Eventually the womb will grow a new lining and the vessels will close. Once all this is done, you dog will be in estrus and able to conceive for up to three weeks after the bleeding stops. You may want to check Leah's gums once in a while. If they are pink, all is well, should they turn white, then she needs to be seen by a vet right away.

My one year old Boston terrier has been bleeding since Feb 26 she’s not fixed is this normal? She’s only spotting now here and there..is this normal??? This is her first heat cycle by the way
A dog's heat cycle lasts for around three weeks, so if she started on February 26, it should be ending soon. It's normal that she is spotting occasionally, and you know when she's out of heat when the discharge stops. Now if the bleeding continues for longer than three weeks or Sophie develops other signs such as anorexia, thick pus filled discharge, vomiting, increased bleeding, and/or lethargy, this is not normal and she will need to see a vet immediately. This doesn't sound like a miscarriage. The blot clot is probably just normal from the heat cycle. I would not be worried about it unless bleeding persists. As a side note, a puppy at 9 months old is probably fertile; rarely are they "blank". They become sexually mature and able to breed a female at about 6-7 months of age. I suspect that she will get pregnant. If you don't want this mating I suggest you speak to your vet about a mis-mating injection.

hello. my female french bulldog is on period. her vagina is swollen. inside her 2 bottom niple there are two glands swollen. is it caused by period?
Dogs do not have periods like people do, instead they have a heat cycle. This can cause swelling of the vaginal area as well as the nipples as hormonal changes will lead to this. If you don't wish to have puppies, I highly recommend having Neka spayed. Spaying can also prevent uterine infections (pyometra) and decrease the chances of some cancers.
