My dog has AIHA. How long does it take for blood count to rise?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old

My dog has been in a hospital since Thursday with suspected AIHA. She is eating and drinking and the first day her red blood count was 13 and then the next had dropped to 10 and it is still 10. She is eating and drinking, they have her on steroids and all the usual meds. How long can she go on like this? They don't want to do a transfusion unless last case scenario. What if she stays at 10?

Once the steroids take effect, the blood count should start to rise very slowly, it usually takes more than a month to go back to normal levels. If there is absolutely not change within a week, a blood transfusion will probably be considered.
