My senior dog is coughing blood and has nosebleeds. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | unspayed | 15 years and 9 months old

My dog has been back and forward to a vet for a few months now, it started with panting and hip problems that were causing her to fall over and not get up without struggling, that has improved with steroids, which gives her relief for 4 weeks, she is now coughing blood and has just started bleeding from nose, she has had 3 courses of antibiotics and is on her third steroid injection, she is 11 years old, and is still eating and going for walks . Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks kelly

Poor Bailey! Coughing up blood along with bleeding from the nose are quite serious, and I would take her into the vet now. This bleeding could be a sign of ulcers, an inability to clot blood, liver failure, respiratory disease, or cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is always a possibly in an old dog, and if she did have cancer that had spread to her lungs, it could cause these signs. I would take her into a vet right away. The vet can do routine blood tests, a urinalysis, x-rays, and possibly blood clotting tests to see what is causing her to cough up blood and have nose bleeds. Once the cause is found, the vet can determine what, if any, treatment is appropriate for her.
