My cat is terrified of the litter box. Why won't she use it?

Thank you so much Doctor. There's just one more thing. Freya had never ever used a litter box. When she was born I tried showing it to her with the cover off and tried switching litters and she acted terrified of the litter box. To the point she would scratch and claw when I picked her up after an accident to show her the box like she knew I was about to put her in it. What would cause her fear of the box? You have been so helpful this will be the last question promise. Thank you. Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like :-) Yes, that could cause her fear of the box, and may keep her from using it correctly. She may not like the cover on the box. I would set up two more litter boxes in the house without covers on them, show her where they are by placing her in them, and see if that helps with her using the box.
