My dog had a slipped disc. Is quick recovery after treatment normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 4 months old

My puggle woke up about 1 week ago and couldn't walk. Vet did some tests and thought she had a slipped disc in her back. She gave her a steroid shot (oral steroids werent an option, her lipase levels were high, but no other signs of pancreatitis) and she gave her tramadol for pain. Within 1 day she was acting like nothing happened and wanting to run and jump and play. And has shown no signs of pain since. Even w/out tramadol. Is this normal with a slipped disc? we are still keeping her resting.

Yes, if the condition is treated right away, then sometimes the partially prolapsed disc can slip back into its place and stops pressing on the nerve that caused her not to walk. However, since the discs are normally encased in fibrous material, this is usually damaged when the disc slips, so care must be taken that it does not happen again, ie, your dog should rest for the next few weeks, no jumping, no climbing stairs, no rough playing.
