My dog's head wound won't heal and has pus. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 years old

My dog has two mysterious open wounds on his head. One showed up first, I treated it, and it's healed. The other one is not healing up, and I don't know what it could be caused from. I'm cleaning it with soap and water and peroxide. It has some goo in it in the mornings. What could this be? Does he need medical treatment?

Poor Amos Tobias! I would not recommend using hydrogen peroxide on wounds, it can damage tissue and delay healing. If there is "goo" in it, I would have to wonder if that goo is pus, which means the wound is infected. He will need to see a vet for the wound. The vet can clean it sterilely, and can prescribe antibiotics for the infection. I would take him into the vet today during normal business hours.
