Why is my mellow cat growling and hissing? Could it be fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 6 years and 3 months old

My boy cat is 6. Fixed. Eating fine, drinking fine, potty fine. Cuddly and purring, constantly wanting to be with me. Everything is normal except the occasional growling and sometimes hiss. He is a very mellow cat and growling and hissing are extremely out of character. Where I live fleas are a huge problem even for indoor animals. Day the irritation from the fleas cause him to be acting this way?

Fleas can cause significant irritation which should resolve once effectively treated if this is the trigger for the behavior change. Other common issues are illness and pain such as from joint disease so a full health check would be recommended if not improving
