My old dog is sick and in pain. When is it time to say goodbye?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 10 years and 1 month old

My older dog has been very irritable and just off lately. She's been getting sick and urinating everywhere. Her breathing is shallow and quick and she's been panting more. How do i know when to take her to put her down? i know she's getting older and i don't want her to be in pain

Since Harley is showing a lot of symptoms of illness, it would be best to schedule a veterinary visit first to see if you can figure out the cause of her symptoms. It's possible they may be treatable with changes in diet or medication that can improve her quality of life. Your vet can also discuss with you prognosis of any illnesses, help determine if she is in pain, or discuss other problems that are found, which can help you make a better informed decisions about how to handle Harley's future care.
