My dog has an eye hemangioma. Is treatment needed if he feels no pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 7 years and 7 months old

my dog has a hemangioma on his eyeball. If we don’t treat it will it be okay? I hear it should be layered off, but if he’s not in pain must we?

Hemangiomas on the eye are typically benign, but I would make sure first that it is benign and not malignant. If it is malignant, there is should be removed. Benign tumors can be left alone if they aren't causing any discomfort or if they aren't interfering with eye function; however, if Rummy's hemangioma is interfering with his eye function, it should be removed.

I am sorry to hear that Rummy has diagnosed hemangioma. Yes surgical removal is definitely the best course of treatment before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the body. Cancer does not always cause pain in the beginning with pets as something that we can detect readily, but it still doesn't negate the fact that they have cancer. I would also recommend having Rummy's lymph nodes biopsied and a chest x-ray to determine if it already has signs of metastasis (spread).
