My dog scoots, licks his rear, and has an enlarged anus. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old

Max has normal bowel movements, but he keeps scooting, licking his tail and anus area. His anus area seems enlarged more than normal. I am not sure what is wrong?

I think Max might have a problem with his anal glands, two scent glands located to the sides of the anus that can get impacted and turn into proper abscesses ( localised infection ). I would recommend that you have him checked over as it can be quite uncomfortable ! He will need some antibiotics and pain relief .

Have Max examined by your veterinarian. He may have or be developing anal gland issues. Full or impacted anal glands may be responsible for the symptoms you are seeing. The anal glands are usually emptied during the act of defecation but sometimes they can remain full. Your vet can express, or empty, them. If there is an abscess, Max will require sedation, lancing and draining.
