My dog has blood in mouth, red skin spots, no injury. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old

My dog has blood in her mouth as well as bright red blood spots on her skin from her chest to butt. However there is no signs of trauma. No broken teeth or dental emergency. The blood is also located in spots she cannot reach to lick so even if it was only her mouth bleeding she could not have gotten blood on her.

This is very concerning. Is there a possibility that Callie might have eaten some rodenticide a few days ago? Or someone's blood thinning medication? You will need to take her to a pet ER tonight as she may be bleeding internally as well. This is an emergency, as it seems that her blood is not coagulating and therefore she can bleed to death. Please take her to an ER now.

It sounds like Callie may have petechia, which is a small red spot caused by minor hemorrhage. This can be due to rat bait poisoning, injury, thrombocytopathy (disorders affecting the platelets abilities to adhere to damaged blood vessels), vascular disease, or thrombocytopenia (immune mediated condition). It is serious that this has suddenly appeared, and I would take Callie into a vet immediately. The vet can do routine blood tests, urinalysis, asses her blood's clotting ability, x-rays, and/or ultrasound to diagnose what is causing this, and how to treat it effectively.
