What causes a cat to leak clear liquid from its butt when constipated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old

I have a 15 month old, male (neutered) cat that has been leaking clear liquid from his butt all day today. When he goes in the litter box he squats like he's having a bowel movement, but all that comes out is clear, sticky liquid. What would cause this and what can I do to fix it?

It sounds like C-More is constipated, and the clear liquid is mucus that his colon is trying to produce in order to relieve the constipation. This constipation could be caused by intestinal parasites, not enough fiber in the diet, anal sac impaction, polyps in the GI tract, or a foreign body. If C-More isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, he will need one from the vet. I recommend mixing in a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps relieve the constipation. If he is still constipated in another 24-48 hours, I would take him into the vet for an exam.

Poor Max! It could be that he's constipated, causing him to cry when trying to poop, and he's pushing so hard to get the poop out that it starts to come before he has a chance to finish digging his hole. Constipation in cats can be caused by intestinal parasites, low fiber in the diet, a foreign body, GI polyps, GI tumors, or anal sac impaction. He could also have irritable bowel disease, which causes painful defecation. I would try putting a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in his food twice a day to see if that helps with his pooping. If it does not, then I would have Max seen by a vet in 24-48 hours.
