My dog's hair won't grow back, has bald spots. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 11 years and 3 months old

I had taken my dog to the Groomers and told them not to shave him when I got him they cut all of his hair off. It has taken all year to get just and inch of growth. And he still has bald spots.. should I get him some vitamins?

Poor Cooper! You could certainly try an omega-3 fatty acid supplement such as Welactin to see if this helps. But, it isn't normal for it to take so long for hair to grow back, so I would be concerned that he may have a thyroid problem or some other underlying medical condition causing problems with his hair growth. When you can, it would be a good idea to have him examined by a vet - he/she can do some basic blood work to check his thyroid function as well as liver, kidneys, etc. If there is a problem, it's usually very treatable with medication once a diagnosis is made, and would be very helpful in getting his hair to grow back in.
