My dog stopped eating her kibble. She only wants human food.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Why does my pet only eats human food and not dog food? She used to eat it, but now she only eats that. She even stopped eating due to that.

It's probably because she likes human food more than she likes her dog food. She should only be eating dog food, as too much human food isn't healthy for her. To get her back to eating her dog food only, I would mix the dog food and human food together, and over time, slowly decrease the amount of human food and increase the amount of dog food until she is eating dog food only. Do not give her any treats during this time, and once she is eating only dog food, do not give her any more human food.

She most likely stopped eating her dog food because she was given a choice. If a pet is offered any people food they will almost always prefer the people food over their regular dog kibble. You have to stop giving people food altogether and wait her out. Most pets can go up to 3 days without eating before causing deleterious effects. I know it is tough, but it really is the best thing for her. You can also try other more palatable dog foods such as Royal Canin, Wellness, or Evo.

Instead of constantly switching foods, which can cause digestive upset and a reluctance to eat, I would try to stick with one food that you want to use for a period of a few weeks. You can add a few treats such as some boiled chicken to the meal to entice eating. You will also want to stop giving any people food or other treats outside of meals as this may be encouraging Lucy to be a picky eater. If she doesn't eat her food within 15 minutes, you can pick it up, and try again in another hour. Most dogs will get hungry enough to try the food and start eating it again.

Hi and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Railay had been living the good life with human food and is likely upset she is now being fed regular wholesome kibble! Keep offering the kibble to her and she will learn to eat it-she wont starve! If you notice she is still not eating much after another few days, I would take her into your veterinarian's office for an exam. Sometimes decreased eating can be caused by dental disease which can be diagnosed by Railay's veterinarian. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Railay!

Please stop feeding Princess people food right away! It is not a balanced diet for a dog, and supplements are not the answer. Buy a good-quality dry dog food. Put some in her bowl at mealtime, put it on the floor, and walk away. Leave it there for 15 minutes (if she is eating, leave it until she finishes, but when she walks away, take the bowl away, too) Do not leave it for her to finish later. This part is very important: do not give her anything else to eat--people food, dog snacks, etc. If she will not eat, do not try to coax her or make a fuss in any way. Give her nothing until her next scheduled dinnertime. Repeat the process above. You will probably find that she refuses the dog food and holds out for the stuff she's used to. She needs to learn that there will be no more, and that she must eat dog food. Remember that you are not "starving" her--you are providing food for her. It is her choice not to eat it. This is a battle of wills. You must hold out even if she cries or begs for people food. She has not been getting a balanced diet or one that is nutritionally sufficient. Keep in mind that she can't be too hungry if she is refusing the dog food. When she is hungry enough, she will eat. Your problem will be solved if you stick to these recommendations. Good luck!
