My dog has parvo. Diarrhea stopped, but she's still vomiting. Is she recovering?

My dog has parvo. I've been treating her at home. She stopped having diarrhea but she still throws up. She does pee normally. Is this a good sign?

If she's stopped having diarrhea, this is a good sign. I hope that she has some medication on board for nausea and vomiting - if not, your vet should be able to prescribe some for you to give at home. Normally, with parvo, the best sign of recovery is when they have gone 24 hours without any vomiting and are eating on their own - until then, you need to continue treatment with fluids and other supportive care.

Fluid loss is one of the biggest complications of parvo because it leads to dehydration and worsening of the disease. Unless she is getting daily subcutaneous fluids, antibiotics, nutritional support and anti-vomit medication, her odds are survival are low, despite the fact that her diarrhea resolved. I am sorry your puppy has parvovirus but just because she no longer has diarrhea, this does not indicate that your pets chances of survival are increased, because this viral infection can be complex and unpredictable things can happen internally at any moment during treatment. It is not uncommon for a pet owner to not be able to afford to hospitalize their pets with parvo, however I encourage you, if you haven't already, to work with a vet that can provide those treatments I mentioned above in the home setting so that you give your pet the best chance at survival. From there you just have to take it day by day.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Mocha has parvovirus, this is a very serious condition. If Mocha is playing, eating and drinking, and has good energy, and isn't having diarrhea and vomiting, this is great! If Mocha is very lethargic, weak, not eating, but isn't having diarrhea/vomiting, it could be that she is just too dehydrated and weak to have any vomiting and diarrhea. If she isn't eating, or not bright, I recommend a revisit to the vet to see if she needs fluid support. Best of luck with Mocha, I hope she is feeling well!

Parvo can affect them for 3-7 days. Since she has stopped vomiting that is good sign. Hydration is key to helping them survive this. Since she is no longer vomiting, you can try some chicken broth with boiled chicken and rice to see if she is ready to start eating again. Typically once they start eating the worst is behind you. The bloody diarrhea usually is the last part to clear.

It is a good sign that the vomiting and diarrhea have stopped but the virus is not out of her system yet. Some dogs will continue to shed the virus for weeks. It sounds like she is getting better but I would not consider her "out of the woods" just yet.
