Is it safe for my 10-week-old puppy to have peanut butter in a Kong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 9 days old

Can puppies eat peanut butter? I want to put natural peanut butter in my 10 week old puppy's Kong while he is crated. Is he too young?

Yes, puppies and dogs can have [peanut butter](https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/peanut-butter). Make sure it does not contain the artificial sweetener [xylitol](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-products-that-contain-xylitol) which is toxic to dogs. Also, to prevent obesity, treats should make up no more than 10% of the total daily calories. I recommend freezing the peanut butter in the [treat-dispensing toy](https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/kong-wobbler-food-dispensing-dog-toy) overnight in the freezer, and that will occupy him for a long time. There are a number of ways to keep your puppy occupied with a treat-filled toy while you are away. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Red. You can introduce the Kong at this age. I would only offer a very small amount of peanut butter smeared inside (less than a teaspoon). At this age, you are just enticing him to play with the toy. Any more peanut butter than that will likely upset his stomach. You will want to always supervise him with the Kong initially as well. When he gets older, some dogs become powerful chewers. You will need to ensure he cannot bite any pieces of the Kong toy off and swallow them. Otherwise this can be a great toy to keep him occupied. When he is older (4-6 months), you can add more peanut butter and freeze the Kong. This will make the treat last longer. I hope this information helps!

Peanut butter should be fine to give at Pluto's age as long as it only contains peanuts/real sugar and does not contain ingredients such as Xylitol. It's a great treat and a bit can be stuffed into a Kong to help keep him occupied.

Yes, it is safe to give Angel peanut butter at this age. I would only use a small amount at a time though. Too much may lead to GI upset and cause vomiting or diarrhea. A small amount such as a teaspoon once daily should be fine until Angel becomes older and bigger. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further!
