How hard is too hard when cleaning my cat's teeth with gauze?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 6 months old | 14 lbs

When you clean the cat's teeth, can you rub too hard (with gauze on finger)? My cat has had resorption on 2 teeth (removed) and I don't want to contribute to more resorption by rubbing too hard on gums?

Rubbing very hard could increase irritation to the gums, but I think it would be somewhat difficult to do this - Moo would probably get upset and not allow it! If you are seeing blood on the gauze this could simply be a sign of gingivitis that should hopefully improve with routine dental care. If you are unsure whether or not you are finger brushing the right way you could potentially schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have a technician/nurse show you the proper way to use the gauze.
