Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 7 years and 5 months old | 70 lbs

My dog has been diagnosed with stage 2 mast cell tumor that is in the lymph nodes. My vet says he has a year to live and does not recommend surgery. Should I get a second opinion?

I'm very sorry to hear about Bean's diagnosis! Yes, if you are interested in possibly pursuing treatment for this problem, I would recommend requesting referral to a veterinary oncologist for a more complete evaluation of your pup. There are many treatment options available for mast cell tumors in dogs, even in situations where the tumor may not be operable. The oncologist can discuss all of your options and give you a better idea of what to expect with whatever option you choose.
