My dog's eye is red and cloudy, vet unsure of cause, what's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Weimaraner | Male | neutered | 10 years and 5 months old | 75 lbs

One of my dogs eyes is very red in the bottom lid and his cornea is slightly cloudy in the lower eye down toward that red lower lid. The vet could not find a scratch or infection and prescribed steroid eye drops. The vet didn't know what was causing the problem and offered to scrap the cloudy area. We decided not to do that's. the dog is a Weimaraner and doesn't seem troubled by it. There is no bulging. Any idea what is wrong?

A cloudy eye can be caused by many conditions, i am surprised your vet prescribed Steroids only- without any antibiotic drops as it is impossible to rule out an eye infection just by looking at the eye. my first choice of treatment would have been an antibiotic drop rather than steroids.
