Dog eye ulcer surgery: When do stitches come out? E-collar tips?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Hi my dog just had a third eyelid flap surgery this afternoon to help heal an ulcer he has on his eye on the pupil. His vet said to come back in three weeks to have the stitches taken out. Is that the normal time to have stitches for that surgery removed? Also, I had to practically force them to give me a e collar for him and I was wondering what are some tips to make this 3wks as smooth as possible for him? I hate seeing him so uncomfortable he is such a sweet dog! Thank you in advance!!

Depending on how severe the ulcer is, the sutures will need to stay in place for at least 2 weeks, and sometimes more. I am glad you got the cone for him to prevent him from rubbing the eye and tearing the sutures out accidentally. After the first few days of surgery you can try removing the cone, while he is under your supervision, to give him a break from it. You can also remove the cone when he is eating to make it easier for him. Good luck during his recovery, I hope he does great!
