Senior dog incontinent, weak legs, pain, licking bum. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 14 years and 2 months old | 27 lbs

My dog is 14, she has started losing control of her bowels in recent months and has been weeing and pooing in the house. Meanwhile her rear legs have become weaker and she sits almost out of her control. Our vet has said there is nothing we can do but this evening she has had trouble lying down as when she tries to it seems she is in pain and jumps up again. She is also panting and licking her bum. Are these symptoms relating to her kidneys or bladder and is there anything we can do to help her?

It is certainly concerning that Hunnie seems to be in more pain, and it is possible that a lower urinary tract issue or potentially rectal pain or itchiness is causing her to lick her rear end. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian since these signs are new. They might want to check a urine sample or blood work after performing a physical exam. If she is not on pain medication, this could help her feel more comfortable and potentially increase her mobility for a little while. Usually kidney disease causes signs like a decrease in appetite, vomiting, or increased thirst and urination.
