What causes my puppy's dull coat, scaly, crusty skin, and sores?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 17 days old | 45 lbs

Blue Great Dane puppy (15 -1/2 weeks old), coat started looking dull and dry. This look of scales on his tale and back area and then it looks oily and crusty and its spreading towards his front area. Looks like a couple of open sores.

Lesions in the picture have several potential causes including mange, a skin infection or allergies. Bathing Mojah may be helpful; however, if the lesions are caused by mange or a skin infection he will likely need additional treatment. If the lesions are not improving, are becoming worse or if Mojah is not feeling well, he should be seen by a veterinarian. They may perform a skin scraping and or cytology of the skin to get a better idea of what is causing the lesions.
