My dog's cut reopened after stitches fell out. Can he go swimming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old | 70 lbs

My dog got a cut and the sutures have fallen out prematurely. The wound is open and has a 1 cm sinus tract. Can I use wet to dry packing or should I leave it to heal on its own. I am a physician and wet to dry is what we would use in a human. Also when will it be safe for him to swim in a lake. He is a 2 yo chocolate lab. Thank you very much.

Without seeing the wound I could not recommend using wet to dry. As I'm sure you are aware wet to dry causes a lot if wound debridement which could actually upset the wound bed depending on its nature. If the wound was sutures I imagine it is quite deep, it would likely be best to return to the vet who operated as the wound may need a revisions surgery or a drain placed. There is also a chance it could become infected.
