My guinea pig scratches a lot. Is it safe to treat for mites?

My daughter's guinea pig, Foxy, scratches himself a lot. We haven't noticed anything wrong as far as bald spots. Would it be safe to treat him for mites in case he has them even if he doesn't? Also what would you recommend as far as products to over the counter?

Poor Foxy, mites are a common reason for guinea pigs to scratch incessantly. I am not aware of a safe over the counter product that works for them. My experience has been to use a spot of Revolution (selamectin) onto the skin. Or a drop of ivermectin injectable which is also off label use. The treatment is repeated weekly until no further itching.
