My cat licks fluid-filled lumps into open wounds. What are they?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My make cat gets large(1.5in in diameter) fluid filled growths. On his chest, face, and leg. I've tried to research this. And haven't found anything that matches. He licks them until its an open wound and often had to be kept in an ecollar until they heal. He was a stray that we took in, so I know none of his history. I can't afford to take him to the vet all the time, but I'm scared he'll get put down if I take him to a shelter

I'm not entirely sure what these growths would be either based on your description- potentially abscesses or skin cysts. Sometimes cats with diseases like feline immunodeficiency virus are more likely to get abscesses. It can be difficult when you can't afford ongoing care - you may want to contact the shelter in your area and see if they know of any programs that offer low cost veterinary services.
