My dog has a rash and weeping sores. Is it hives? Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 5 months old | 92 lbs

Our british/oldtyme bulldog cross is used to coming everywhere with us but due to a car breakdown we have a hire car which he isn't allowed in. He has come out in a rash over his whole body varying from little tiny spots to larger weeping sores. I think its Hives but not sure how to treat it esp if its stress. also whislt most are very small bumps, some are a bit larger and one on the back of his neck is weeping quite badly. Should I just leave this to dry out by itsself which they usually do?

Poor Spud looks like he may be having an allergic reaction to something, and also likely has a secondary bacterial infection going on. He needs to be seen by your vet to get a better idea what is causing the skin issues. He likely needs to be on anti-inflammatory medication like Apoquel or Prednisone, and an antibiotic. This will make him feel better and heal the skin issues. You can apply an epsom salt/warm water compress to the rash areas on the neck, but he really needs to see a veterinarian for proper treatment and medications.

Hives are a possibility for some of them but the larger ones seem infected. Spud may have a secondary bacterial infection on his skin that is causing some of the bumps and spreading. It is best to keep neosporin on the larger ines until you can get him to a vet for further testing to find the underlying cause.
