How to reintroduce a cat after isolation without causing fights?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

I have 2 cats and my roommate has 1. 6 months ago they were integrated and getting along. 2 months ago she began keeping her cat in her room all the time but there was no evidence of fights ever. Now she wants to begin locking my cats up for 10 hours a day. She tried this before without my knowledge and my cats became agitated and aggressive being suddenly locked up. I think doing it again is a bad idea but I need advice on reintegrating a cat who has been exiled w/o creating aggression w/mine

You could start by feeding them on each side of the door that separates them so they can smell each other and have it be a positive experience. Next, you can switch rooms - lock your cat in her room so your cat can investigate the smell of her cat and let her cat roam the house. Then you can try them together while you can supervise and see what happens. You could get some Feliway spray or a diffuser and use that to alleviate any stress/anxiety.
