Why are both my dogs vomiting and having diarrhea after I got a new dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

We found a dog and took her in. She has been interacting with our dog Apollo. They get along great and have basically become bestfriends. She acted like she was starving no matter how much food we gave her. The past few days we have noticed her throwing up maybe 4-5 times a day. Each time it's mostly a white/clear substance. Our dog threw up this morning and now both of them have diarrhea. I am not sure what I should do.

How lovely of you to take in Artemis, but I'm sorry both of them are ill! Given that you have taken her in and likely have no idea of her vaccination status, I would take them both into a vet immediately since they are both suffering from vomiting and diarrhea. I would be very concerned that she could have parvovirus, which is a life threatening GI infection that is extremely contagious. Your vet can do blood tests to check for parvo, and while there is no cure for it, intensive supportive treatment is available. While it could be a simple GI illness, without knowing Artemis's history, it's best to be safe than sorry, especially since Apollo is now sick as well. Please take them both into a vet now.
