My cockatiel hurt his foot in the cage. What's the best way to help?

How can I help my cockatiel heal his foot if he got hurt in his cage?

You should wrap the perches with some soft material so it is easier for him to perch, if the foot is not badly hurt it will heal within several days, if it is badly hurt you need to take him to an avian vet specialist to get it treated.

    Keeping the foot and wound clean and dry and keeping Jewel from picking at it are best. You may want to place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on her (Google has tutorials on how to make bird sized ones) as well as provide some flat, low perches that are easier for her to stand on while she heals. If the bleeding continues, she is in a lot of pain, the wound is large, or it appears to be infected, vet care in person is best to have it cleaned, treated, and medications given.

    Thanks for reaching out about Sunshine and including photos. It does appears as if there is a bruise on the foot. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and determine the damage. Soft tissue trauma can improved with pain medications, but a fractures should be stabilized. Make an appointment with a veterinarian. Good luck.

What can we do to help his parrot? He's acting like his leg has been hurt. We dont kno what happened , just started showing signs of it yesterday?
Remove or lower high perches. Pad the cage bottom to prevent injury if he falls. Have him examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian vet as soon as you can get an appointment. Keep Gaylord warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor.

Feed an appropriate pelleted diet supplemented with a fortified seed mix. Use perches of different diameters to exercise the feet. A flat perch platform can also be used to make perching easier. A broken nail can be clipped off at the break. Minor bleeding can be controlled with gentle pressure and some plain cornstarch.

If the wing is hanging down it should be bandaged to his body to stabilize it until healed. This could take a month or two. There are many ways to do this. It is best for your vet to do it so you don’t make it too tight but you can google and watch you tube videos on how to do this. He needs to stay in the cage, don’t even let him attempt to fly until the wing is healed.

My cockatiel has lost some toes. Her feet look better but she is staying on the bottom of the cage what can I do to help her?
It is absolutely not normal for a bird to lose toes. You don't mention how this happened, but some common reasons why this can happen is trauma from getting fragile little toes stuck between bars of the cage, bite wounds from a cagemate, or even from things like infection or cancer. It is best to set Charley up on the bottom of her cage with a soft blanket, plenty of food, and fresh water. She may have a hard time gripping her perches. Keep them very low in the cage (like 2 inches from the bottom) or remove them completely and try rolling small towels into little "ground perches" until you can get Charlie in to be examined by a veterinarian who will perform a full physical examination, discuss husbandry (including cage setup), and may recommend bloodwork. Poor bird! If the foot is at all infected, trying to find a vet that can help in person is best. However, until you can find one, it is a good idea to separate the bird from any cage mates to keep from being picked on, and move him to a warm hospital cage with larger, flat perches that will make perching easier on his feet. Keeping the foot clean and dry and using an ointment such as Blu-kote (most feed and pet stores carry this for use in poultry and other birds) can help prevent infection. You can also Google how to make a bird-sized Elizabethan (cone) collar to put on the bird so that he can't get to his foot and bite it while it heals.

Ouch! That does sound like she's injured her foot. Until you can get to the vet, providing some low, flat perches that are easier to stand on (like a platform rather than having to curl her toes around it) and food and water dishes she can easily climb in and out of may help her relax the foot a bit and maintain her balance easier. Keeping her warm and preventing her from picking at or chewing on the foot can also help. If she's housed with other birds, moving her to a hospital cage to avoid being picked on is also a good idea.

Hopefully your bird just injured her toe nail and is a little sore. However, she may have fractured a bone in her foot when she became stuck. While not having a leg won't stop his ability to breed, it would probably be best not to put extra stress on him since he is already missing a leg. If he can't get around well either, it may be best to keep him housed in his own cage, especially while he heals, to avoid other birds picking on him and worsening his injury. Providing a cage with wide, flat perches and shallow food and water dishes can help him get around a bit more easily while he recovers and learns to live with one leg.
