Is dark discharge normal for my dog at the end of her heat cycle?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 4 lbs

Why does her blood when ending heat turn darker? Is it because she barely bleeds when in heat so it's just old blood coming out? The picture included was a week ago. It's lighter in color now. It has no smell, she's eating & drinking regularly, very hyper(runs around the whole house), & using the bathroom good too. She's getting spayed this September.

The color of discharge during a heat cycle can be extremely variable throughout the duration of the cycle and it can even change from cycle to cycle. Based on what you've described it sounds like Precious is experiencing a normal heat cycle. If the discharge becomes smelly or she begins to act lethargic or ill, have a veterinarian evaluate her just to be safe.

It's not unusual for the blood to turn darker toward the end of the heat cycle. i believe you are making the right choice having her spayed, she is already quite old and in high risk of mammary gland tumors.

Yes it is likely this is just old genita blood that is oozing out. As long as she is acting Norma and it doesn't have foul odor to it, and it goes away after a few days, it shouldn't be cause for concern. I hope everything continues to go well for your pet Precious. Take care
